Heroes
by billy ray hatley
Leaving Sunday morning, heading back down South where I was born.
This Chicago life is all right but it ain't the kind of place that I call home.
Head straight into Memphis, cruise by Graceland.
It always makes me high.
the king's been dead for all those years
but his spirit won't ever say goodbye.
"Don't Be Cruel" rang through my ears.
The last time I had my baby on the phone she said "I'm a guitar widow,
and I'm tired of always being home alone.
Make up your mind if you're gonna stay
If you're gonna play that guitar, I gotta go."
"Heartbreak Hotel" it sure hit home.
She knows damn well, 'cause we've had this talk before.
Yeah, I comb my hair, it looks just right
I'm movin' my hips, people sayin' it just can't be.
But heroes, they won't ever die.
If you don't believe it, just take a look at me.
Sometimes I sit and count the stars
and I wonder just which one could be him.
And I wonder what he'd say today about all this mess he left us in.
Then I can hear him singing "Daddy Don't Cry"
and I know somehow he never said goodbye
'cause he put them smiles on all those faces
and all them tears in all them women's eyes
Yeah, I comb my hair, it looks just right
I'm movin' my hips, people sayin' it just can't be.
But heroes, they won't ever die.
If you don't believe it, just take a look at me.
