FINGERBOARD
A barely radiused, fully bound fingerboard and scalloped ivory nut immediately attract any player's attention. | This classical instrument (notice the delicately crafted African ivory nut) features an unusual fingerboard of Gaboon ebony (Diospyros piscatoria), fully bound with holly veneer and flammed maple (Acer saccharum) . The binding alone is unusual in a classical guitar and provides, for the most part, only aesthetic enhancement. The most unusual feature is the slight radius fashioned into the fingerboard. Classical fingerboards are typically perfectly flat... and though some purists may look down their nose at anything that deviates from tradition, I employ the use of the radiused fingerboard to facilitate the left hand technique of a professional player with very small hands. |
The slight radius is not seen to adversely affect right hand technique in the least. Additionally, I've found that the radius increases the stiffness of the neck, resulting in improved sustain and much better action. It also tends to improve string to string balance, adding a special crispness to the "D" and "G" strings (this, from the slightly curved saddle, used to mirror the fingerboard detail).
The fingerboard binding provides an additional barrier between the often times sharp edges that develop on classical guitar frets and the player's sensitive fingers, making interface with the instrument a player's delight. |
Beautifully seated frets are individually faceted and polished to ensure player comfort. |
